John Shirley's Poem

The Counselor Is In

They say the counselor is the heart of a school
and most school counselors I know are really cool
with that description of the role they play
in support of their students and school each day.

Two traits which are common to all counselors
are a zeal and passion for helping others,
accompanied by an intense love for what they do -
as they work to help every child’s dreams come true.

The average day (and there is no such thing)
of most counselors is very likely to bring
a myriad of unanticipated things to do
and difficulty doing what’s scheduled, too.

Great Winter Conference once again!

Thank you to all who made our annual conference successful! We had fantastic speakers, a great venue, good food, fun prizes and wonderful participation. We were able to meet 6 new members and welcome back 31 current members. We held our conference at the Colin County Community College, Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco. It was a great event room with great sound and technology. Hope to see you at our Summer Conference on June 15th. Location to be determined and we will have registration available the end of April.

Sincerely,
NMCA Board Members

April Board Meeting - Voting on By-Laws

Please attend the Saturday, April 16, 2011 board meeting at 8am. It will be on the southwest corner of 75 and Campbell at the Starbucks (101 W. Campbell Road, Richardson, TX, 75080). We will be voting on the following changes to our NMCA by-laws.

-Removed verbage of ACA except as a requirement for Senator position. Since our organization models everything after TCA, it seemed appropriate to have the By-laws indicate that.
-Under Committee Section 1, Summer Conference was added
-Voting has been changed to "communicated electronically" instead of by mail

Working with Spirituality in Counseling by: Ryan D. Foster, Texas A&M University-Commerce

Spirituality is an integral component of human development (Benson, 2004; Foster & Holden, 2011). However, for several decades, experts in the field of counseling advised that counselors avoid talking with clients about their spiritual or religious beliefs (Young & Cashwell, 2011).
